Bridford and Teign Valley Garden Club
Newsletter January 2010
It is with great regret that we have to inform you of the death of Ken Kirby.
Ken passed away on Sunday 27th December at Exeter Hospice as a result of the illness against which he had battled so bravely. He will be greatly missed by many members individually and by the Garden Club in general, having been our Treasurer for many, many years. Always very friendly and helpful, Ken was highly efficient in all the tasks he so willingly undertook. We could rely on Ken who in turn had tremendous support from his wife.
Our thoughts go out to Pauline, their son, two daughters and grandchildren.
There is to be a private cremation followed by a memorial service at Christow Church on Wednesday 27th January at 2.15 pm; it is hoped that as many members as possible will attend.
Rod Hancock has kindly agreed to become Acting Treasurer. For the present this is a Committee appointment and will be subject to verification when the proposed new Constitution is put before a specially convened meeting of members during the spring of this year. Please continue to settle any unpaid subscriptions in the normal way, with cash or cheques made payable to Bridford & Teign Valley Garden Club. As agreed at the AGM in December the annual subscription remains at £5 per person for 2010.
Rod Hancock’s address is Fairlands, Christow EX6 7LX Tel: 01647 252051
The annual buffet dinner will be held as planned at Bridford Village Hall on Friday 22 January at 7 pm for 7.30. After due consideration we feel that Ken would have wanted us to carry on with our annual meal and there will be an opportunity for us to remember him at the start of the evening. Following a long-standing custom we ask each member attending to pre-wrap a present, costing around £1 or only a little more, to be placed on a table for members to have their choice when their number is drawn. If you have not already booked for the dinner, and wish to go, the latest date for contacting Rod is 14 January in order that catering arrangements can be finalised.

Future distribution of Newsletters from the Club
Following the death of Ken Kirby we are presently reviewing the arrangements for distributing newsletters to members as this was yet another Club activity in which Ken provided a vital link.
It is a distinct possibility that future newsletters will be sent by Email to those members with an Email address. This would considerably facilitate distribution and keep costs down especially as around half of our members are now able to receive material in this way. However, for such a system to operate effectively it would depend on members opening their Emails on a fairly regular basis and notifying the Membership Secretary if there is any change to your Email address. Please let me know if this proposal causes you any problems.
The newsletter content could be read on screen or you could take a paper copy if you have a copier.
Please rest assured that the Club’s membership list, including Email addresses, is kept strictly confidential, is used only for Club administration and is not passed on to any third parties.
